Wow, I haven’t been on this blog in quite a while. I was actually reminded of its existence thanks to a spammy comment I received that WordPress asked me to moderate. My grand aspirations for making this account my primary one haven’t quite been realized. However, after about five seconds of thought I’ve decided to resurrect it and see where it goes. Stay tuned.

drunk driving sucks

About two weeks ago I was hit by a drunk driver. I was riding with my boyfriend and the accident totaled his car. With the adrenaline flowing, I didn’t think I was really hurt, except for a few minor places where the glass shattered and later transferred to my legs. But it’s been two weeks and I’m still not back to normal.

We hired a lawyer from the outset, and at first although I was convinced it was the right thing to do, I had my moments of doubt. Surely all this muscle soreness would just go away on its own. I didn’t really need therapy, right? I still can’t believe how messed up I am without having broken any bones. It’s difficult to turn my head. I wake up sometimes when I’ve been more active than usual and I’m sore all over. I can’t do normal housework. My Lenten promise involved being active every day, and that’s been completely blown thanks to the pain I experience every day. Even the pain pills I’ve been prescribed aren’t doing much of anything.

I’ve been putting off making an appointment with a chiropractor besides the initial evaluation. I think part of my reluctance to go to therapy is the fact that starting it means admitting that I might be dealing with this for a long time. I don’t want to be in pain. I just want things to be back to normal. I HATE the fact that I might be limited in any way…but I already am, so this hesitance is entirely irrational.

Monday, I’m making an appointment. I may have been blindsided with this accident, but I’m taking control in the only way I know how: by getting better.

So, after a tumultuous few months I’m single for the first time in two years. It’s an odd feeling seeing as I’ve been in various relationships for a good majority of my adult life. I’ve been mulling over all aspects of my current situation, and have come up with a list of the positives and negatives. It’s important to see the bright side, right?

Things that Rock about Being Single

Sitting at home for entire day in pajamas watching reruns of “Kimora Lee Simmons: Life in the Fab Lane” without remote being appropriated in favor of Texans game.
Time to work on writing, photography, dance and other creative pursuits.
No being dragged to significant other’s holiday celebrations and having to remember mom’s cousin’s daughter’s niece’s roommate’s dog’s name.
Getting to spend more time with friends.
No arguing over what movie to get at the video rental store.
I get to flirt with cute guys at shows and bars without guilt.
Spending time with my kitty without significant other’s disdain.

Things that Suck about Being Single

Sitting at home for entire day in pajamas watching reruns of “Kimora Lee Simmons: Life in the Fab Lane” without anyone to confiscate remote and prevent me from losing brain cells.
Time to work on creative pursuits will instead be squandered through marathon internet sessions.
Uncomfortable Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations in which well-meaning adults related to me will inevitably ask me if I am “seeing someone”. Will also be compared to 19 year old cousin who is engaged and speculation on why I don’t already have a litter of children will begin.
Friends will quickly tire of constant and pathetic badgering to “hang out with meeeeee”.
Since I’ll be watching the movie alone, I will fall asleep halfway through with bag of potato chips spilled all over my front.
Probability of cute guys that will flirt with me: very slim. Probability of creepy guys my dad’s age that will want to hit on me since I’m alone: very high.
“Crazy cat lady” accusations become frighteningly potent.

So, uh, yeah…I feel slightly less reassured now…

I’ve been blogging off and on since high school. Back in the early days people were predicting that blogging was the wave of the future, was going to change lives, was going to cure cancer, etc. I never really understood the hype. People have kept diaries for ages, and having a blog is like a year-round version of the Christmas newsletter–which, to be honest, has the possibility of becoming utterly horrifying. I prefer to diversify out of holiday sweaters and Bridget’s volleyball honors, personally. I’m not quite sure how any of that is supposed to shake the structure of the world to its very core, however.

Though blogging’s effect on modern society is debatable, all I know is that it has been a fun journey to look back through some of my old posts. I probably wouldn’t have committed any of these things to words had it not been for blogging–call me a casualty of the present age, but it’s really difficult for me to write on anything but a word processor. It’s kind of mind-boggling to think that a person can change SO MUCH over the course of a few years. I even feel like a different person now than I did at the beginning of the summer due to so many shakeups of so many varieties. It seemed fitting that a new chapter in my life deserved a new space in which I could put my thoughts.

So yeah. Don’t expect me to solve world hunger or bring about peace in the Middle East as you read through my daily ramblings, because that’s all they are; observations made about things that make me think, seasoned with a little humor and curiosity.

Also, you should not expect any pictures of me on Santa’s lap. I’m saving that for the holiday newsletter.
